Privacy Policy

Introduction

Welcome to Travel Eat ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application (the "App") and website. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not use our services.

1. Information We Collect

Personal Data

  • Account Information: When you register for an account, we collect your email address and display name to create and manage your user profile. This information is securely handled by Firebase Authentication. A verification email is sent upon registration.
  • Purchase Information: If you purchase scan packs or subscribe to our Pro plan, we use RevenueCat to manage your purchase and subscription status. We only receive information about your purchase history and subscription state (e.g., active, expired). We do not collect or store your payment details such as credit card numbers. All payments are processed securely by the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

App Usage Data

  • Menu Images: To provide our core service, we process images of menus you capture with your camera or select from your photo library. The full images are sent to our servers for processing by Google Gemini AI (Vision) for dish recognition, description, and translation. Menu images associated with restaurant locations may be stored in Firebase Storage to build a public menu database.
  • Location Data: With your permission, we collect your geographic coordinates to find nearby restaurants and to improve dish image search relevance for your region. Coordinates are reverse-geocoded to determine your city and country. You can deny location permission and still use the App's core scanning features.
  • Technical & Analytics Data: We use Firebase Analytics to collect standard technical information, including your device type, operating system, and anonymous usage statistics to help us improve the App. This includes Firebase App Check to protect against abuse. On our website, we additionally use Google Analytics.

Camera & Photo Library Access

The App accesses your camera to capture menu photos and your photo library to let you select existing images for scanning. On iOS, you can also share menu images to the App via the system Share Sheet. We only access photos you explicitly select or capture — we do not scan or access your full photo library.

Information We Do NOT Collect

  • Contacts or address book
  • Financial information — payments are handled entirely by the app stores

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your account
  • Provide our core functionality: dish recognition, description, translation, and allergen identification
  • Find dish images from the web to help you visualize menu items
  • Show nearby restaurants and their publicly scanned menus
  • Manage your scan balance and provide access to purchased features
  • Send you a verification email upon registration
  • Monitor and analyze usage trends to improve the App
  • Troubleshoot issues and protect against fraudulent activity

3. Disclosure of Your Information

We do not sell or trade your personal information. We may share information with the following third-party service providers who help us operate the App:

  • Firebase (Google): User authentication, cloud functions for AI processing, Firestore database, Cloud Storage for menu images, analytics, and App Check.
  • Google Gemini AI: Menu images are sent to Google's Gemini Vision API for dish recognition, description, and translation.
  • SerpAPI: Used to find images of recognized dishes from the web to help you visualize menu items.
  • Google Places API: Used to retrieve restaurant details and location information.
  • Outscraper: Used to retrieve restaurant photos.
  • RevenueCat: Processes scan pack purchases and subscription management. They only receive the necessary user identifiers to link a purchase to an account.
  • Google Analytics: Used on our website for anonymous usage analytics.

These third-party services have their own privacy policies. We encourage you to review them. We may also disclose information when required by law.

4. Data Security

We use administrative, technical, and physical security measures to help protect your personal information. We rely on Firebase Authentication for secure account management and use HTTPS to secure all data in transit. While we have taken reasonable steps to secure the information you provide, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable, and no method of data transmission can be guaranteed against interception.

5. Data Retention

  • Account Information: We retain your account information (email, display name, scan counts, balance) for as long as your account is active.
  • Menu Images: Menu images associated with restaurant locations may be stored in Firebase Storage as part of a public menu database. You can delete your scanned menus at any time from within the App.
  • Analytics Data: Anonymous usage data is retained in accordance with Firebase Analytics default retention policies.

6. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
