Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Travel Eat
Getting Started
How does menu scanning work?
Simply open the app, point your camera at any menu, and tap the scan button. Our AI will detect the text, translate it into your language, and show you what each dish contains. The whole process takes just a few seconds.
Is the app free to use?
The app is free to download and you get some free scans each month. If you need more, there's a Pro subscription with unlimited scans — weekly or monthly, cancel anytime.
Do I need to create an account?
No account is required to use the core features. You can scan and translate menus immediately after downloading. Creating an account (optional) lets you save favorite dishes across devices and access your history.
Features
What languages are supported?
We support 36 languages including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Georgian, and many more. We're constantly adding new languages.
Does it work offline?
Yes, offline mode lets you view your previously scanned menus and scan history. This is useful for revisiting dishes you've discovered. Scanning new menus requires an internet connection for AI translation.
How do dietary filters work?
Set your dietary preferences (vegan, vegetarian, pescetarian) and allergens (14 EU allergens including gluten, nuts, dairy, shellfish, and more) in the settings. When you scan a menu, dishes are filtered and flagged based on your restrictions. The AI analyzes ingredients to make these determinations.
Can I save dishes I like?
Absolutely! Tap the heart icon on any translated dish to save it to your favorites. This creates a personal food dictionary of dishes you've enjoyed around the world, making it easy to order again in the future.
Accuracy & Safety
How accurate are the translations?
Our AI understands food and culinary context, not just literal word-for-word translation. It works well across common languages, but like any tool it's not perfect. For severe allergies, we always recommend confirming with restaurant staff.
Is it safe to rely on for food allergies?
Travel Eat is designed to be a helpful guide, but we recommend it as an additional tool, not a replacement for communication with restaurant staff. For life-threatening allergies, always verify ingredients directly with the restaurant. Our translations help you ask the right questions.
What if a translation is wrong?
If something looks off, reach out to us at support@traveleat.app. We take feedback seriously and use it to improve the AI over time.

Technical
What devices are supported?
Travel Eat is available for iPhone and iPad. We support devices running iOS 15.5 and later for the best experience.
Does the app use a lot of data?
No, the app uses very little data — a typical menu scan uses about 1-2 MB. Your scan history is available offline, so you can revisit translations without using data.
Why does the app need camera permission?
Camera access is required to scan menus. We only access the camera when you actively use the scan feature - we never access your camera in the background or view your photo library.
